We walked kicking a chunk of ice. Back and forth, into doorways, against curbs, and off the backs of our own heels. The goal: to knock it straight and true. The dangers: our fellow pedestrians and the wheels of passing cars. As we played the ice became honed to the task, losing unnecessary protuberances, evolving into a proper ball amid sparks of ice until, finally, perfection collapsed in upon itself and we found a new clumsy lump with a potential for brief greatness.

°2004.01.19.mo | RSI and Doctors

I've been managing my RSI for about 10 years and haven't been paying much attention to the "field" since my initial problems. However, given my recent flare-up and my consequent "re-entry" I note that the official medical route is still extraordinarily frustrating: my doctor prescribed splints (I mentioned I can get discomfort from my pinkie finger back to the mid back, but wrist pain is the least of my symptoms), and the therapist has less than a year of experience and she isn't familiar with the major books on the topic. One such book, that I'm happy to have found, since my original problems, is Damany's and Bellis' It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: RSI Theory & Therapy for Computer Professionals. I also like the exercises and stretches in Egoscue's Pain Free. The best stretches are in Butler's Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In the morning I do those exercises, and often watch and follow Priscella's Therapeutic yoga that the ReplayTV catches. I wish I could find an experienced doctor and therapist, but like last time, it's never easy, and often expensive.

Everglades Flamingo Beach SunsetI'm back from visiting family, a trip to Florida, and a two week break from typing. The traveling was great, as was the typing break but when I sit in front of the computer, my body seems to remember its complaints. Hrmm.

The one notable difference I'll note from our trips in 2001 and 2002 was our excellent trip in the Everglades. While Clay is inexpensive and central to South Beach, the Everglades Hostel is an excellent base for canoe trips through mangrove tunnels and has that community vibe that is always so charming: yummy communal $3 dinners, nice facilities, camping in the back, and lots of dogs running around.
