The Hook is an awesome venue right in the hood and — considering how much I enjoyed 16 Horsepower — it seems I'm digging the spiritual in my tunes as well. Matisyahu is certainly an intriguing performer, and it was a joy to see the boys with the tzitzis (tassels) jumping around holding hands in a circle.
A good quote from J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye: "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one."
From Ikkyu, centuries ago:
Writing something
to leave behind
is yet another kind of dream:
when I awake I know that
there will be no one to read it.
I had read that folks with back problems can — surprisingly enough — ride horses without discomfort. The saddle permits one to keep one's back in the supportive s-curve posture. Last week, I started sitting in a Kayline saddle stool and my back feels so much better, even if the chair is a bit weird looking. Also, now that I sit on a zafu even on my evil futon, I'm sitting with a good posture most all the time!
The odd thing is that neither of these ways of sitting has any obvious back support! Instead, one is sitting in a relaxed and stable posture and letting the back support itself.
A gatha is a small meditation, often to remind oneself to be mindful. I composed this one last week:
Sitting in a meeting
I grow bored;
so I follow
my breath.
